Exploring Elements of Practice

  • Made some global connections

  • Communicated with director of Samburu project, waiting for book about Ryan and Jimmy's story(Ryan's well project)
  • connected with classroom in the Everglades ...will discuss ways to have meaningful conversations between our classrooms in January
  • will be speaking and Skypeing with principal in Peru regarding her water project after first of the year

  • Change of Global Direction
  • 1/6/15 connected with Malaki Michael at Obwororo Academy in Kenya, interested in having his students become penpals with our second graders and in working together to find a way to bring clean water to their village/school (many of their children have to spend time in the hospital due to unclean water
  • 1/7/15 sent names of our second graders to Michael to match with Kenyan friends
  • 1/7/15 spoke with Ed Blumenthal about speaking to second graders about insects.
  • 1/8/15 email from Michael, topics to focus on with kids will be culture, tourism, tea/coffee and compare/contrast Kenyan life with life/schools here, included photos of the classrooms and students, village is going through a drought now
  • 1/8/15 began reading the book Ryan and Jimmy: and the Well in Africa That Brought Them Together to our second graders, kids begin to develop an awareness of water shortage in Africa, the many miles children have to walk to get water and how unclean the water is, and how they/we could make a difference
  • 1/12/15 Ed Blumenthal (entomologist) to speak about insects and how they could affect clean water (had to cancel as he had the flu)
  • .1/13/15 sent pictures of our kids/classrooms
  • 1/13/15 received email from Michael saying water proposal would be coming soon, found out that their school also cares for orphans in the village, received more photos
  • 1/15/15 received water proposal from Michael, it will cost $7,402 to provide a water pump and tank
  • 1/18/15 emailed Michael regarding skyping/using whatsapp to communicate, 8 hour time difference, waiting to hear their school hours
  • 1/15/15 connected with Nadia Bogue (Environmental Projects coordinator at Sixteenth Street Community Health Center) will come in and share power point on
  • water in Wisconsin and world, her experiences with water in Kenya

Expert Reflections

What's next?
-Skype with Michael, most students live at the school so timing is not as critical as originally thought
-involve Susan Gray in fundraising ideas

Kids generated questions for our skyping session with our penpals in Kenya; during our skyping session the kids were able to hear/see their new friends, ask their questions and answer the questions presented by the Kenyan children
skype photo.jpg

Nadia presented a program on water to the second graders. The kids had generated water-related questions to ask. The children carried gallon water jugs around the school to get a feel for what it is like to walk miles each day to get water. Emailed Barb Lurie, Chelsea Clinton's personal, assistant for non profit ideas.

Sara will help us build a safe, walled community through Edmoto where the kids can send and receive emails from their penpals

When Susan Gray returns, we will make our plans for regular bake sales.

Karin and I created a safe email Penpal space in Edmodo. Unfortunately, Michael in Kenya cannot access/utilize this.( internet is extremely expensive for them)

Michael finally paired our kids with his students. We are going to send emails to our penpals through Michael's email.
3/15/15 - sent our first email to our penpals

Crayfish Project
Children are working in 4 different groups; each with an essential question What is a crayfish? What is a crayfish diet? What is a crayfish habitat? What is needed to have crayfish as a classroom pet? The kids have come up with questions that they have put on post its and are using books and the internet to find the answers. Each group will present their research to the class in a Show Me, Pic Collage, I Movie, etc.

Once the research is complete and presented, we are going to get crayfish for our classroom to go along with our swamp theme.

All research was completed and each group presented their info in a "Show Me"
Crayfish were ordered from Carolina Biological. Tank and accessories were purchased. Crayfish arrived 3/11/15 (Received a bonus crayfish in the container.)

.The students will be closely monitoring the actions of the crayfish as they learned, from their research, that crayfish are very aggressive and will eat others.

Community Project
The children have earned money for 4 weeks and recorded their deposits in their bank books, made down payments on either a ritzy ditzy or regular house, created and presented speeches, elected a mayor, judge, housing commissioner, and supervisor of maintenance, named our classroom community (United Second Grade of America) worked on business, service and residential teams to create Coolmunity on the bulletin board in the hallway, participated in weekly town meetings, chosen partners, made final payments on their houses, paid taxes, had their houses delivered, painted their houses, shopped at the community store to buy things to decorate their homes, and worked with their neighbors to create street names and addresses.

IMG_4763.JPGIMG_4767.JPG
The kids have decided that they would like to make a phone book that has everyone's phone numbers and addresses.
Phone book was created and each child has his/her own.

Responsible Reader of the Week
The children each will choose a book to read to the Junior kindergarten. They will read to our class first and we will be able to discuss. Two children each week will prepare to visit the junior kindergartens. Readers began their reading visits April 16th.

Continents each child has been studying a continent. Watched You Tube videos on the continents to develop interest. Used questioning process as an introduction; what they thought they know, what they wonder about, how do they find out, what they learned (documentation)What kind of important information they wanted to include was discussed as a class and a template for notes was created. The children researched their continent and recorded their information. Pictures and pic collages were found to coincide with the information. The students are now creating an I Movie to present to the class. We are hoping to find people in the community that can come in and share firsthand knowledge of each of the continents and may share foods from the various continents.

Talked with the computer teacher about extending their knowledge/note finding documentation with a mind mapping activity. Will see how that goes. Does that help them reflect/go deeper with their information.

Did the questioning as a whole group. Successful for constructing template. Could try questioning in pairs to glean other information? Children were able to find the information needed but it was clear that there were definitely gaps/lack of understanding. Ex. they found names of foods related to countries but when looking for a picture to represent this, they had no idea what the food was. More documentation is necessary for them to fully comprehend their information.

Confirmed that kids need more guidance/guidelines/choices in finding sources, more examples.

May Readathon as a class we've set a goal to read 5, 000 minutes during the month of May. The kids will keep track of their minutes on a weekly basis and record the title of the book and pages read.

Penpals the kids are enjoying sending emails back and forth with their Kenyan friends. We have SKYPED several other times and each child was able to meet and talk with his/her penpal. The water project for our penpals' school has been funded and we are so happy for them. We will now focus on collecting much needed school supplies for their school.(pens, pencils, erasers, pencil sharpeners, rulers) Kids have brainstormed ways to earn money to purchase these items.

Endangered Species - next topic

Continents - kids did a great job creating i Movies to share what they learned about their continent. They shared their movies with each other and then with the first graders. It was special to see the students collaborate with each with the i Movie app. They were so helpful sharing their knowledge and experience with i Movie.

Peer Feedback - Jodi, Mara and I worked together to create a form and sample statements for students to share feedback with each other (see forms below in resources)

  • Documentation & Reflection

    • Document: As a "Lead Learner"...
      • What specific shifts are you noticing in your own actions, priorities, language, questions, reflections and conversations that help shape the learning culture for which you strive?
    • Reflect: Documentation & Reflection
      • What's the relationship? What connections do you see between documentation & reflection in your own learning?
      • In student learning?
        • at what cost?
        • to what benefit?
    • Design 1-2 additional opportunities for students to engage in documentation and reflection of their own learning
      • please post a brief description of each opportunity
      • add 2-3 student work samples from each opportunity
      • be sure to note any tweaks, modifications or iterations
